About the Course

The Global Energy and Climate Policy course offers an introduction to the theoretical and practical understanding of how energy and climate change policies are designed, shaped, advocated and implemented. As energy markets go truly global, domestic energy policies are becoming more and more entangled with wider issues of international governance. Concurrently, the urgent need to mitigate and adapt to climate change and transition to a low-carbon future is adding a further layer of complexity. The course is aimed broadly at people interested in learning more about interconnected issues in energy and climate policy globally. It assumes a level of interest but no necessary previous knowledge. However, the course also offers sufficient up to date research and new critical perspectives to be of interest to people with expertise in or academic familiarity with the topic as well. The main aim of the course is to provide this wide-ranging introduction in a self-contained, but in-depth form, alongside the important practical skills necessary to understand and discuss energy and climate policy, and lay the groundwork for greater engagement in the future – either through academic study, in the public, private or not-for-profit sectors....

I believe is a well-structured course and the readings do complement a lot. Would like to see longer courses from London University regarding this subject.

The weekly assigment of 350 words is particularly useful. In order to write extensively, the students need to read the Course sources and find other available sources on the Web.

This format is less than stellar for the content. I would prefer less of a Ted Talk / interview style and more of a classic teaching concept, overview, scenario, and the interviews as a supplement.

Many of the links are outdated or paywalled, making assignments and readings harder.

Overall, you learn some things, but the course is repetitive. There are only so many times you can come to the same conclusion of "people act in their best interest." I think this course is worth a good review and rework to make a much more stable and solid impact on learners.

All in all, I learned some concepts of global energy and climate policy.

However, the course material is slightly dated and some links to neccessary reading material are broken. In addition, I am not a big fan of the assignments given as the evaluation creteria are somewhat arbitrary. 1 point per assignment seems too low to evaluate an assignment throughoutly.

In my opinion, the interviews in the video material were too superficial at times and I would have hoped to experience some in-depth discussion.

This course has some interesting material but two big caveats. First, it's showing its age - the most recent materials in the class are now four years old, and this is a rapidly changing area. Second, it's lightly enrolled so there weren't many people in the forums, and the few ones there seemed to focus mostly on getting someone to peer review their essays.

Would love to see this class refreshed with current content, and run less frequently so that the student body gets commensurately larger.
